STUDIO SHOT Photo by Chris Witzke Thirty years ago, Arty Allen won a fish at a carnival by tossing a ball into a fishbowl. "I remember the woman handing me the fish and realizing I had gotten a pet without my parents' permission," Allen says. "I knew I'd need to get a fish tank." He used a piece of driftwood as the centerpiece in his first tank and has been "aquascaping" ever since. His Highlands home has 10 running tanks (three of them saltwater). How many has he decorated in his life? "Oh, gosh," he says. "I'd have to say 100 or more. Easily." (He's won more than 200 ribbons at the Kentucky State Fair, where this year he submitted Muham- mad Ali- and Minions-themed tanks.) Allen, an auditor by day, aquascapes 10- to 55-gallon tanks in his basement. His favor- ite fish are the blue-and-red neon tetra (freshwater) and the clownfish (saltwater). For a Shark Week tank, he used fishing line to suspend decorations in the water. Another featured a Christmas village, with ceramic houses and white rocks to replicate snow. "It's a moving, living canvas," Allen says. — Margo Morton
