24 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 9.16 THE BIT SHIFT The familiar rustle of treats jostles the cat from her slumber. Sluggish but de- termined, she emerges from her abode, reaching for the carpet below. Her realm of clean wooden shelves, bags of birdseed and an eclectic selection of garden trinkets towers above. Milly, a tortoiseshell shorthair, is a resident of the St. Matthews business Backyard Birds, which sells avian mate- rials (birdhouses, seed, etc.). Adopted by owner Walt Christensen from the Sham- rock Foundation in 2003, Milly original- ly was tasked with capturing and slaying mice in the store's original location, when it was still part of the Wild Birds chain. Christensen went independent in 2013 and moved to a newer part of the neighborhood. Mice are no longer a problem, which suits 12-year-old Milly perfectly fine. Despite the joys of retirement, she stays plenty busy. Paws With Purpose, a nonprofit that trains and provides service dogs to those in need, often brings in pups to see how they react when confronted with a cat. When she's not viewing bird videos on a computer screen, or batting around toy mice in remembrance of days past, Milly greets customers at the counter. Though met with the occasional cat phobia, or the stunned disbelief that she is, indeed, a real cat, Milly is quite beloved. Some regulars come in just to play with her. "People see the cat and they light up," Christensen says. "It makes the store a comfortable place to be." — Aaron Hartley eastlouisvillepediatrics.com thepetstationinc.com Coming 2016 4800 Murphy Lane | Louisville, KY 4800 Murphy Lane | Louisville, KY 40241 h 40241 4800 Murphy Lane | Louisville, KY 40241 i (502) 526-3456 | Scott@thepetstationinc.com | thepetstationinc.com #VacationForYourPet Situated on 6 Park-Like Acres • Doggy Day Care • Kitty Condos • Customizable Stay Options • Indoor Dog Pool • Indoor Dog Park • Staff On-site 24hr/day • Lodging • Grooming • Training Illustration by Kendall Regan
