20 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 9.16 A BIT OF HISTORY All that we know about this U of L Archives photo — shot as part of the 20th-century tradition of dressing up animals in mini human garb for the camera — is the year it was taken, 1949. (History tells us that, cute photo op aside, Scottish Queen Mary Stuart (1542-1587) kept an entourage of small dogs in blue velvet suits.) The chicken, obviously, has been dolled up in a tiny Bo Peep dress, complete with crook and frilly pantaloons. You can see that it took some finagling to get the bird's wing through an arm hole, and that, viewed from the back, the dress might not have looked in good taste. You can also note the outline of this man's knuckles on the apron as he grips the chicken. kyoms.com
