The home's three cubes are painted different shades of gray to accentuate the geometry. avid Gilbert took a lot of razzing when he finally decided to move from L.A. back to his Louisville hometown in 2010. How he could leave California for a state known more for its high obesity and tooth-loss rates than its economic opportunities was beyond the ken of his Golden State friends. But, having grown up in St. Matthews' Broad Fields subdivision, Gil- bert knew Louisville had a lot to offer, particularly in terms of its housing stock. "Tere is a history in this community of supporting architectural preservation. I always brag about it to everyone in L.A.," he says. "Louis- ville has some of the greatest architecture and one of the largest Victorian preservation districts in the country. We were early in the preservation movement, while Los Angeles is still tearing significant buildings down." Gilbert knows of what he speaks. He has a master's degree in art histo- ry from Rutgers and authored a chapter about Michael Graves' Portland Building in Te Critical Edge: Controversy in Modern Architecture (M.I.T. Press: 1985). Although he spent 15 years in the music industry, Gilbert's admiration for good architecture — particularly 20th-century American architecture — has been a constant throughout his life. When the music industry began changing, Gilbert segued into real estate, buying old properties, renovating and flipping them. He began redoing houses for stars such as Eva Mendes and Molly Sims, and in 2005 his L.A. condo and work were featured in Hollywood Life and In- Style magazines and on Dwell TV. All the while he kept an eye on properties in Louisville. In 2009, be bought and renovated an apartment building in Germantown and hired 7.12 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE [77]
