Best Vintage Clothes The Nitty Gritty 996 Barret Ave. Tere may be another place in town where you can find square-dancing crinolines, go-go boots, a round avocado suitcase, a portable bar, your choice of Shirley Temple dresses, disco wear, pointy-toed men's slip- ons in a white size 15, and a stand covered with sombreros, but it's not likely. Owner Terri Burt (in photo) opened the Nitty Gritty as a one-room vintage shop 12 years ago; now, after substantial sales growth each year, it's 2,200 square feet over two floors, with a themed-costume component that's rivaling buyable vintage wear that stretches from the '20s to the '80s. "Girls come in today and are like,'Oh gosh, that's so crazy,'" Burt says, "and then their moms are going, 'I used to wear that.'" — JW Best Friday-Night Bargain Churchill Downs FRIDAYS AT CHURCHILL began slowly, gained steadily and, saving much ground after moving the first post to 2:45 p.m., passed GOING TO THE MOVIES in mid-stretch and pulled away strongly from IDUNNOWHATUWANNADO through the last eighth. HAPPY HOUR, the winner's stablemate, was joined by $3 DRAFTS, who loomed menacingly on the turn, to close a big gap into a dead heat for place. Late-running PADDOCK CONCERT, up for third, finished gamely. LOTS OF SEATS ran evenly. SHORT BETTING LINES held on well in the final drive, as did GREAT VIEWS and ACCESS TO PADDOCK. GOING TO THE MOVIES tired badly. IDUNNOWHATUWANNADO appeared to pull up. REDBOX quit in the stretch. ORDER PIZZA failed to stay. HIT THE GYM was done after three quarters.
