[ Circuit ] 21 All-time favorite Derby winner? Questions With… Koons-McGee 54, owner of the Comfy Cow What's something nobody knows about you? "Many wrinkles, pounds and years ago, I was a model in New York." Earliest childhood memory? "Swimming in my grandmother's pool." When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? "An attorney or a veterinarian. I was pretty deft at arguing, especially with my parents, but I also had an intense love of all animals." Public or private school? "Big supporter of public education. I made it to and, yes, graduated from Princeton University coming from a public high school. The majority of children will be attending public schools, and ultimately our workforce will be a direct reflection of the strength of that system." The weirdest place somebody has recognized you in public? "Walking through Doc Crow's, someone leaned over and said, 'I just love your ice cream.'" Who's doing big things in Louisville and is flying under the radar? "Bobby Benjamin (of La Coop) will one day be a rock-star celebrity chef. Guarantee you'll be mesmerized if you ever have a chance to talk to him about food." WE LOVE The city's archaeological find of the year: that nostalgia-spiked sign for Baker Boy Hot Do Nuts uncovered by the construction crew refurbing a half-block of buildings for a new Mellow Mushroom pizza restaurant, scheduled to open in mid-August, in St. Matthews. The sign dates back to the 1950s, when Baker Boy lasted a couple years before Dutch's Tavern moved in. We called Mellow Mushroom to see if it might consider leaving the sign — it's not just retro; it's history! — and Jason Nase, the local franchise owner, said the company wants to restore it and leave it where it is. The bar at the Mellow Mushroom won't have doughnuts but, Nase says, it will feature more than 40 beers on tap and 40 more in bottles. Because they're willing to save that retro sign, we'll be there. [12] LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.12 Last live performance you saw in town? "Wilco at the Palace." What Louisville band would you pay to see? "The return of Digby." Your drink? "Crystal Light Green Tea anything." Bourbon drink? "Our Derby ice cream made with Old Forester is the closest I get to a drink these days. Gave bars up a while back. Best decision of my life!" All-time favorite Louisville athlete? "Johnny Unitas, who played at U of L. I grew up right over the Maryland line in Pennsylvania, and we were huge Baltimore Colts fans. When Johnny U. came to our hometown when I was 10, I got to sit on his lap and get my picture taken." Illustration by Rachel Koops "I was at home as a little boy watching Secretariat on TV. Big Red was my idol." The most you ever lost on a horse race? "$100. My dad owned racehorses, and I actually was a trainer at Churchill for quite a while." Best book you've read over the past year? "End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason, by Sam Harris." Can't-miss TV show? "Grey's Anatomy." What film has had the greatest influence on your life? "Running With Scissors. It sort of validated to me that incredibly dysfunctional families are more the norm than not." Fleur-de-lis: had enough or can't get enough? "A lovely and enduring symbol of our heritage." Bardstown Road, Frankfort Avenue or Market Street? "Frankfort Avenue, or as we call it: 'The Ave.' I will be the new president of the Frankfort Avenue Business Association and have always considered Frankfort Avenue to be Bardstown Road for adults." "______________'s Louisville" should be the next banner on the side of a building. "Mooooouisville." Have any tattoos? "A steer head on my upper arm. Drunk in Richmond, Ky., many, many moons ago." If forced to get a tattoo today, what would you get? "I'd actually like another one. I am looking to get the Comfy Cow logo somewhere on my body." Tim Photo by Amanda Bates
