22 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.16 Plus 8 More Earliest childhood memory? "Helping set up the 'white elephant' booth at the Cherokee Triangle Art Fair. My parents chaired that fair for years." What song's been stuck in your head lately? "'The Jackal,' by Ronny Jordan. I kill it in karaoke." How'd you make your first dollar? "Babysitting. I was 10. No children were harmed in the process." When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? "I was drawing pictures of housing and cities in kindergarten and was interested in public policy from an early age. I've been lucky to end up doing what has always engaged me." The weirdest place somebody has recognized you in public? "American Club, Peshawar, Pakistan, as the Taliban rolled into Kabul in Afghanistan. A lawyer I'd checked a bag of books for on a plane pre-9/11. I had no idea who he was." Besides your current one, what's the best job you've ever had? "Counselor at YMCA Camp Piomingo. It taught me my most profound lessons about work ethic, responsibility and how to make an impact. On four hours of sleep." What's your favorite thing hanging on the walls at home? "A Leonard Baskin print from my Uncle Adam's house. I got to know Lenny and his family in Massachusetts through my high school best friend, Penny. And my ncle was just unspeakably amazing." Vices? "Haribo Süss and Sauer Gummi Bären from Germany. In the states they are Twin Snakes." What are you wearing right now? "My favorite jeans, my Bensimon gray sneaks, a gray tee and an Ann Taylor gauzy sweater. I'm on a plane back from my goddaughter's wedding at a Swedish vineyard." What Louisville dish have you eaten more than any other? "Now: Brussels sprouts at Theater Square's Marketplace. Then: Burger's Market Benedictine." What should every person try once? "Rock climbing at the Red. Torrent Falls. There is nothing like the Red River Gorge." What/who makes you laugh? "My kids, but they can't know that. My Camp Piomingo friends. They have made me physically ill from laughing." What three people would be on the guest list to your ideal dinner party? "Gregory Corso, William Faulkner and Hunter Thompson. I'd probably be dead by the end of the night, but what a way to go." Favorite movie scene? "The marionette scene from Sound of Music. Hands down. 'High on a hill was a lonely goatherd.'" What movie has the greatest ending? "Citizen Kane. Although my son guessed 'Rosebud' in the first five minutes when he was 10. That just hurt." What's something you wish you had known when you were younger? "That there are no deadlines in your personal life. But the ones in your work life are really important." One thing Louisville is missing? "Construction cranes. But we are about to fix that problem, in a very big way. I'm so excited for 2018. So many great projects happening." 21 QUESTIONS Illustration by Kendall Regan Fill in the blank: "_______'s Louisville" should be the next banner on the side of a building. "I have to disqualify myself here because I'm part of the committee that gets to decide that. We get great suggestions, and we also need thoughts on where the project should go next." Where do you go to be alone? "Cave Hill. My grandparents, my dad, Mrs. Twist and running away from the swans." If you could write it yourself, what would your headstone say? "She helped. She loved a whole lot." What makes somebody a Louisvillian? "To connect people and enjoy the two degrees of separation we have. And to understand that Derby parties with bouncy houses in the backyard are just as fun as being at the track." The 48-year-old executive director of the Louisville Downtown Partnership lives in the Cherokee Triangle. Rebecca Rebecca Matheny Matheny What's on your nightstand? "Chargers. So many chargers." What tattoos do you have? "None. I have a horrid fear of needles." Secret talent? "I can make a one-match fire. Every time." Least- favorite word? "Maudlin. So misused." What word do you overuse? "Clearly." Biggest regret? "Not studying abroad in college." The most unusual benefit of your job? "Someday I'll get to drive our vacuum cart." If you could be mayor for a day, what would you do? "Resign."
