20 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.16 THE BIT DIRTY BIT You folks rope- swinging and toe-dipping at Big Rock in Cherokee Park? Gag your gag reflexes. According to MSD's most recent water-quality report, three years of data collection show that when it comes to bacteria (E. coli, for example) the middle fork of Beargrass Creek (the part that runs through Cherokee) pretty much always exceeds a level considered safe to play in. Things get even grosser after a big storm, when the pipes that make up Louisville's inner-city sewer system collect both storm water and wastewater — toilet deliveries, laundry waste, etc. Pipes can only handle so much. So at some point, diluted but untreated wastewater moseys down the creek. MSD advises that nobody come into contact with Beargrass for two full days after a large rain event. And even on days when there hasn't been a recent storm, MSD recommends washing with hot, soapy water after contact with the creek. We recommend pools or sprinklers always. — AM When patients at Kosair Children's Hospital are having trouble dealing with medical complications, pediatric psychologist Bryan Carter often stops by with the Coping Cart, which sort of resembles a '90s-era iMac. The contraption (the original version debuted about 10 years ago) features a computer, a 27-inch monitor, color-changing LED lights and a kicking subwoofer. "When kids are in the hospital feeling like crud, you need a wow factor," Carter says. The computer contains dozens of videos created by former patients at Kosair and a handful of other children's hospitals. (A $12,500 grant from the Children's Hospital Foundation covered the cost.) Topics range from fighting boredom (pranking your nurses is one suggestion) to facing a heart transplant. In one video, a 10-year-old cancer patient named Cody Kneisler demonstrates how to take pills without gagging by first learning to swallow cupcake sprinkles, then Nerds, then M&M;'s, then caplets filled with hot- chocolate powder — all of it chased with Mountain Dew. Many of the videos end up at copingclub.com, where kids all over the world can view them. "When I hear about a child passing, I'll get in touch with the family to see if they want me to take their video down," Carter says. "None of them has wanted me to. They all want it to be there for the benefit of others." — Mark Ray WE LOVE Photo by Chris Witzke DAN B. SANTOS SR., CLU DANIEL B.
