LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.16 13 I met LaNia Roberts when she was paired up with me as an assistant for a summer art workshop I was teaching. At her senior art show at Central High School, I bought this self-portrait from her. She's currently a student at Syracuse University and has become renowned for her funny and powerful series of videos for the Huffington Post about self-acceptance, self-love and empowerment. Carrie Neumayer Illustrator I love crafting a good diorama. Flash back almost a decade ago when my husband and I were living in Nashville. He caught wind of a Diorama-Rama party on a nearby college campus. Never mind that we were in our late 20s. We were in. The theme: puberty. Punk rock and booze included if you brought a diorama. I will G-rate our entry: a mannequin we snagged from a Macy's dumpster wearing an '80s-era aerobics leotard, a dragon face and some strategically placed streamers to represent the strange, surreal onset of puberty. A Barbie doll looked up to our fierce puberty deity. The piece was called, "Are you there God, it's me—." We won third place. Whenever I see our commemorative poster, I'm reminded that I'm lucky enough to have a partner who commits to filling spare time with bizarre, hilarious quests. Anne Marshall Senior writer This giant map of the city, circa 1978, hanging on our living room wall. I got it for $20 at an antiques store in Corydon, Indiana. Amy Talbott Contributing writer A St. Louis friend, Nick Otten, created a scroll-style print (titled "Out of the Silents") with four words on it: oh, ah, ho, ha, which he claims are the four basic expressions of language. If I remember right — surprise, vigor, belief, humor. Charles Wolford Contributing writer About 10 years ago, Dionisio Cabalas hired me to photograph his paintings and in the process became fascinated with Photoshop. He spent the next two weeks in my studio learning the program. On the last day, he brought this painting to me as a gift for the lessons. It is actually three-dimensional and painted on wood layers with oil and beeswax. Chris Witzke Photographer My grandmother needlepointed this "Home Sweet Home" piece, and it once hung in her house. I can still feel her love emanating from it. Ginny Lutes Advertising account executive OK, I know this is ridiculous, and it's not so much hanging as stacked, but I am a madwoman for Karl Ove Knausgaard's My Struggle books, despite their excessive detail. I study the pile every single day. The nerve of the damned title! Mary Welp "Dine In" columnist brazeiros.com
