An ice cream outing is scheduled with Suki, this magazine's art direc- tor, but when we intersect at the water cooler I utter a most pathetic mumbling: "Do we have to go get ice cream?" Suki's got a cold, and dairy on drainage doesn't sound appropriate. I'm the mother of a four-month-old who's deploying sleep-deprivation techniques even Donald Trump might agree are inhumane. Driving into the depths of Jefferson County south of the Gene Snyder for ice cream? No, no, no. It's 50 degrees outside, all gray skies and goosebumps. Deadlines, deadlines. We drive what I recall as one large loop and a few squiggles to get to Smyrna Parkway and Barrel of Fun, an ice cream shop Suki had learned about on the web- site Roadside America a few weeks back. We pull up to the candy-cane-striped shack, tucked next to a daycare. A giant white pickup parks in haste, a sturdy fellow in jeans descending with stern focus, like he might take fst to dashboard if this ice cream craving goes unfxed any longer. An adorable elderly woman with red-framed glasses and happy, gray curls takes our order — a chocolate malt for Suki, an Oreo furry for me. My knuckles turn purple as we endure chilly gusts. Still, I'm giddy and impatient as I hear the grunts of a machine crushing Oreo into my vanilla soft serve. (Barrel of Fun also has hard, scoopable ice cream.
