30 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 5.16 GLIMPSE Photographer Nerissa Sparkman took her camera to three barbershops: Big City Styles downtown on Chestnut Street, the Derby City Chop Shop on Bardstown Road and Market Street Barbers in NuLu. Julius K. Wilkerson Jr. (barber), Big City Styles "It's important that you eat right and get rest, because even though you may not think so, standing all day burns a lot of calories. So I eat right and take Wednesdays off, so I have the strength to get through Thursday, Friday and Saturday, which are my busiest days. "The frst two years of my life, my legs were in casts. I was very, very bowlegged. I have three boys, and two of them had to have those casts as well. I would think that back in the day, my doctor would have said, 'This is not the profession for you.' I probably wasn't made to stand up for these types of hours on a daily basis, but hey, this is what I found to be a good profession for raising my three boys and taking care of my wife." Sondra Wilkerson (barber), Big City Styles "We play this cool music that's kind of laid-back to keep everybody in a cool, comfortable and chill mode. Our clients used to ask about it all the time — 'Where do you all get this music?' They would go on and on about the music, so we decided it would be fun for one evening to get together with some clients and invite some of our artist friends in the area to come and play and do poetry and what-not. We dubbed it the 'soul lounge.' People liked it so much that they kept asking for it, so now we do it on a regular basis."
