"My father's handwriting on a Betamax videocassette." All-time-favorite album? "Almost impossible to select just one because my music choices shift with feeling. "Soon after sunrise, roaming the streets with no agenda other than trying to see nature and structure in a new way." How'd you make your frst dollar? "Power-washing empty pools at a putt- putt golf course in West Virginia." The weirdest place somebody has recognized you in public? "On a train platform in Chicago. They had seen Old Baby perform and recognized me from that. It was shocking." In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job? "Make efforts to fnd connection." Your most noticeable quirk? "My clothing choices." What are you wearing right now? "A pink button-up shirt tucked into tight- rolled, army-green, high-waisted pants. Orange shoelaces in my brown boots. A bell and a piece of agate around my neck." What is the most unusual beneft of your job? "Discovering new spaces within yourself and helping others discover new spaces within themselves." Who's doing big things in Louisville and is fying under the radar? "Tim Barnes, who operates Dreamland in NuLu, is providing a great depth to performing arts in Louisville." Your drink? "I am always on the hunt — the sober cocktails at Decca restaurant; the horchata at La Bamba; the taro root bubble tea at Heart and Soy." Favorite possession? "My acoustic guitar, Beulah. Also, a guitar pick that Lowe Sutherland gave me. These may be the only truly sentimental items I possess. Beulah has been with me for 15 years, reminding me of home. The pick, which I carry in my pocket, is a wonderful reminder of a beautiful, continuing friendship." What's on your credit-card statement? "I've lived credit-card- free for years. I fnd existence without them much simpler. I usually know I can't afford it; no need to think twice." What song has been stuck in your head lately? "Charlie Haden's 'Silence.'" Can't-miss TV show? "Togetherness on HBO." Greatest movie ending? "The Elephant Man." Your vices? "Coffee and imagination. Often simultaneously." Superstitions? "I always make a wish when I see 11:11."
