On Sept. 17, 1998, Louisvillian
and Air Force 1st Lt. M. Brice
Simpson died in a training
accident when his F-16 crashed
and erupted into fames in
Misawa, Japan. One day this spring, he flled
with light, the noon sun in apex above the
Patriots Peace Memorial on River Road.
Four concrete walls form a big cube, open to
the sky, stairs rising in the center. The clear
bricks in the otherwise solid-gray structure
memorialize military personnel who died
outside hostile action — the Navy lieutenant
commander struck by a passing car as she
stopped to help police offcers with an
accident before reporting to her ship; the
young Marine who died of cardiac arrest
in training in South Carolina; the man shot,
accidentally. A stone brick removed for each
of them, replaced by a window through which
only light may pass.
