LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 5.16 15 Illustration by Kendall Regan I haven't seen a music video in 15 years! Friday Night Videos on NBC was my favorite show growing up. I always remember it being a huge deal on MTV when Madonna came out with a new video. And I'll never forget A-ha's "Take On Me." I think that was my frst crush on a rock star. Mandy Wood Advertising account executive The "very special episode" of a sitcom. D.J.'s eating disorder on Full House, Jessie "I'm so excited!" Spano popping caffeine pills on Saved By the Bell, Brad getting busted with weed on Home Improvement, Shawn's dad dying on Boy Meets World, Urkel on Family Matters rapping into a megaphone about gun violence. The credits would uncharacteristically roll without music or clapping from the studio audience, and sometimes the actors would deliver a public service announcement ("There's no hope with dope!"). I'm pretty sure the frst time I cried watching TV was during Fresh Prince when Uncle Phil hugged a hysterical Will, whose dad had just left him again. What I'm trying to say: It's time for Modern Family to tackle immigration or homophobia. Josh Moss Editor Writing long letters to friends. Writing in journals made of paper. Paper zines and single-issue comic books. Customized mix CDs made with extensive liner notes and silly drawings. Carrie Neumayer Illustrator I'm probably the only person in the world who thinks this, but iPods with an actual click wheel (none of this touch-screen b.s.) need to make a comeback. I still use a third-generation iPod Nano when I'm running because I can skip songs without stopping to look at the screen. Or looking at the screen while running and risking a broken ankle. Plus, these things are indestructible. They're the iPod version of the Nokia 3310 brick phone. Amy Talbott Contributing writer Barenaked Ladies. No explanation needed. Michelle Eigenheer Executive assistant Quality cartoons like Gargoyles, Tailspin, Darkwing Duck and Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers. Kids these days don't know what they're missing.
