80 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 3.16 Matthew White Gray & White (Class-Action Law) Why class-action law? "It allows people whose claims would typically be pushed aside to join together and fght. It levels the playing feld for individuals against the large corporations of the world." What's the most interesting class- action case you've worked on? "One we're in now is interesting because it's a timely issue — healthcare and healthcare cost. This one is centralized in Birmingham, Alabama, and we represent hospitals and other healthcare providers against Blue Cross. We're alleging that Blue Cross is controlling the market — setting prices in the market. In some of the markets, they'll have a 90-plus-percent share, and they might be the only game in town, so if you're a medical provider, you either play ball with them or you don't play." What do you make of popular TV shows like Making a Murderer and The Jinx and the podcast Serial? "I have heard of Making a Murderer, but I haven't seen or listened to any of them. I don't watch TV. If a TV is on in my house, it's usually Star Wars or a show one of my kids is watching. And thankfully, they're not watching Making a Murderer, from what I've heard." Timothy W.
