The stun- ning kitchen (opposite) and (right) the classic foyer stair- case and archway. Te Church. His projects typically combine sleek, modern design elements with 19th- and early-20th-century architecture. Tat made him the right choice for Elizabeth, who says she prefers "simple, more contem- porary lines." Te Mayses knew what they wanted: an updated kitchen along with a more acces- sible back yard, screened porch, usable deck, storage for the kids' bikes, master bedroom with a private bath, and another full bath on the third floor. Te only solution, they thought, was to add on. But Rawlins came up with a more cost- effective plan that gave them nearly every- thing on their list and, just as importantly, kept the project within budget. "Te house had already been added on to at least twice," he says. "When I walked through, it was obvious that they had a lot of rooms that weren't being used very well. Tey had enough space, but it didn't work for them." Rawlins' solution: keep the house within its existing footprint, make better use of the space and play up their huge back yard. Other than new in-wall speakers, his plan left the front two rooms untouched. Te foyer retains the original staircase, built-in bench and fireplace. Elizabeth added the ceiling fixture and burlap coffee-sack cush- ion on the bench — a "nod to my husband's business," she says. In the living room, a sectional sofa and chaise from Scout on East Market Street has become the kids' favorite spot for doing homework. Elizabeth found the rope chairs at Dandelion Boutique on Lexington Road and the rug in a West Elm catalog. Another chair, painted white and upholstered with a whimsical rabbit print from IKEA, once be- longed to her grandparents. Te plantation shutters on the windows were crafted by the Burkhart Company on South Shelby Street. Te dining room is where the real renova- tions began. Replacing the once-solid wall between the dining room and kitchen is an island. Horizontal windows above the back counter visually open both spaces to the back yard.
