90 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.15 9 0 L O U I S V I L L E M A G A Z I N E 1 2 . 1 5 TOOLS OF THE TRADE Photo by Chris Witzke "I work with a bunch of taxidermists in various places," says Sarah Moeding, 37, who named her jewelry brand Dead Things. (Squirrel paws and coyote bones are both pictured.) "My squirrel source, that's all from road kill, and she is in Minnesota. I have a guy in Hawaii who picks up naturally shed antlers. I was interested in the witchier side of life from a very young age. My frst dead thing was a turtle claw I got at a Renaissance festival when I was 15. In 2009, my sister gave me a mink skeleton for Christmas, in pieces, so I started making brooches for friends for their birthdays." Moeding doesn't exclu- sively use dead animal parts, though. "This is chain from the '80s; this is chain from the '60s," she says. "I like extending it beyond the bones. There's just so much in the world, so I use what already exists." She often travels to collect beads and stones, such as agate, chrysoprase and prehnite (all pictured). "I don't like uniformity or purity. I like things to be raw-looking," Moeding says. Stores in New Orleans, Nashville and Min- neapolis (where she's from) sell her jewelry. Lo- cal sellers are Dot Fox, Consider Boutique, Pink Door Boutique, Gifthorse and, predominantly, Bermuda Highway, owned by Houndmouth's Katie Toupin. "Katie from Houndmouth borrows my stuff to wear in photo shoots. They wore my stuff on Conan and Letterman. I got a text from a friend of mine: 'Did you know that your jewelry was on Letterman last night?' It's super-exciting." —MCA
