THE
LINE ON
"I've been using a
lot of sources from
history — narrative
based on mythology,
post-Renaissance. It's
sort of a blending of
that part of art with a
more modern aspect,"
says James Russell
May, whose work
often hangs at the Tim
Faulkner Gallery in the
Portland neighborhood.
For this oil painting,
inspired by the story
of Lady Godiva and the
horse, he used Galkyd,
"a substance with the
consistency of honey,"
for the background.
"The horse and woman
are detailed, controlled,"
he says. "For the
background, I surrender
to a chemical reaction.
I know it's going to do
certain things, but I can
never control it 100
percent. It's nice to be
surprised by your own
work sometimes."
