24 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.15 THE BIT DIRTY BIT On a recent Friday night, under a sliver of silver moon, the 10 o'clock hour captures nightlife in a one-way mirror. Old inspecting young, young glancing at old, each on their respective turf at a Schnitzelburg intersection — Lydia and Hickory streets. On one corner, a cluster of seven or so smokers lean on a rail outside the Old Hickory Inn, lovingly known to neighborhood veterans as "Old Hick." It's a worn, trusty bar — cheap drinks in plastic Dixies, motorcycles out front, vintage hairdos, Crock-Pots and saltines occasionally cluttering a card table. Cigarette butts fall to the sidewalk like New Year's confetti. Tonight, there's much to observe between inhales and exhales. On the opposite corner, a dance party at Lydia House, a new bar and restaurant that tomorrow will feed its fock Gouda cream chicken sandwiches topped with roasted mushrooms and kale on a brioche bun. Tonight, pink lighting spills to the street. A DJ posted near a window pursues party beats. Dancers down hearty craft ale. A few take breaks in lawn chairs out front for a smoke, casually aware of Old Hick's crew gathered beneath a rusty "Whiskey by the Drink" sign. Lydia House used to be Flabby's, a Germantown staple that matched Old Hickory's style. A lot has changed in this neighborhood. It's hip, or creeping that way. Just a few days earlier, TV news crews embedded themselves with a vocal few upset that new bars keep popping up. One woman mused about an antique store, careful not to declare her heart's true sentiment: Hipsters begone. But at this hour, a balanced seesaw, old and new eyeing one another from across the way. The two sides won't clink shot glasses in the middle of the street and merge sloppy dance moves. This isn't a country music video. But it is symbiosis. It is Friday night. And we all want to party. — AM jefersoncountyclerk.org
