LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.15 21 Louisville Magazine December 2000 FLASHBACK loucol.com theparklands.org On the cover: Maysville, Kentucky, native and Miss America Heather French pictured in a Seelbach suite two days before her wedding to Lt. Gov. Steve Henry. Inside: Writer Linda Romine met a stressed Heather French, who, in less than 48 hours, would walk down the aisle at the Cathedral of the Assumption. "French is quietly seething," Romine wrote. "With a clenched jaw and frm voice, she tells no one in particular, 'Let's just get this (photo shoot) over with.'" Once she and her fancé sat on a sofa together for an interview, French opened up, especially about wanting to work with military veterans. "Veterans should be at or near the top of the food chain and they're always, always, scraping the bottom," she said. In a column about U of L men's basketball coach Denny Crum, then editor Bruce Allar wrote, "It's obvious that he does not feel the urgency about the team's fortunes that we fans do…How patient must we be, Denny? How patient?" Three months later, Crum ended his 30- year U of L coaching career by accepting a $7 million buyout. Next up: Rick Pitino. Also: Pavorotti at Freedom Hall; the Come Back Inn selling jars of its "oniony, garlicky" marinara sauce; the release of the 1,100-page Encyclopedia of Louisville; and a roundup of the year's "ignominious events," including a local jury that fipped a coin to determine its verdict in a case about a husband who'd shot and killed his wife. Outside: From the Courier-Journal: "Computer sales strong in area"; "Tobacco farmers to get $114 million"; "Congress OKs bill to reaffrm simulcast betting."
