One of the most notorious murder cases in Louisville history still manages to make headlines almost 30 years after the gruesome crime. On Sept. 29, 1984, two 17-year- old students from Trinity High School got lost on their way to a Trinity football game against DuPont Manual High. Scott Christopher Nelson and his friend Richard David Stephenson stopped at a Moby Dick restaurant at the corner of Logan and Oak streets to get directions. Tere they met Victor Taylor and his cousin George Wade — and their tragic fate. Taylor and Wade told the Trinity students that, if they could get a ride, they'd direct them to the stadium. Instead, they took them to a vacant lot, where Nelson and Stephenson were bound and gagged. One was sexually assaulted. Both were shot in the back of the head. A Trinity High jacket was traced back to Wade, who implicated Taylor in the crime. So highly publicized were the "Trinity Murders" that the trials of Taylor and Wade were moved from Louisville to Lexington. Both were convicted. Taylor, whom Wade said pulled the trig- ger, received the death penalty. Wade got a life sentence. Afterward, Wade recanted his testimony against Taylor, which led to years of appeals. As recently as 2009, the case was still making news when Taylor lost one of his appeals for a new trial. Taylor has now been on death row for longer than Nelson or Stephenson were alive.
