Paris Norton Cancer Institute 2401 Terra Crossing Blvd. 244-0692 Radiology An Ly Church DXP Imaging–Louisville Endovascular 5129 Dixie Hwy., Suite 100 447-8786 Vincent is a psychiatrist with University of Louisville Physicians. How did you get into this line of work? "I worked as a nurse for many years at Norton, and I started in critical-care nursing and became a nurse administrator. I loved administration, but I missed the relationship that I had with my patients. I got further away from patient care, so I decided I would go to medical school." What advice would you give to someone who wants to go into your feld? "The best advice I would give to any (potential) physicians would be to listen to your patient and really hear what your patient is telling you. Get to know your patient as a whole person, which includes their emotional needs, their physical needs, in the context of their spiritual and cultural lives. You really need to understand the whole person you are treating." Do you have a favorite tool or piece of equipment? "This is what I tell the medical students and the residents I work with: In psychiatry, we can use a stethoscope and we can use other pieces of medical equipment, but our primary equipment that we use is ourselves. We listen to what patients say and it truly is the patient- doctor relationship. If a patient relates to a psychiatrist as a person, that's the tool." Dr. Kathy Vincent
