28 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.15 "Two of my eight bikes run. God, I'm slow. I mean, they run when they're not in pieces like they are now." "You ever think of fnishing one before you take another one apart?" "No, that's not the way I work. I'm working on both of these right now. I'll show you a picture. This is a 1974 Suzuki GT250. And this is a 1982-ish — it's made out of seven different motorcycles, but it's a GS450. Its title is an '82, but it's got parts on it from '89. When I'm not playing with bikes, I teach history. I'm a history teacher." "A motorcycle is a city horse. If we could ride a horse, we would. But we can't, so we get the motorcycles." "Why do you like riding motorcycles?" "Freedom, baby, freedom. I could capture me a damsel in distress, throw her on the back and we just riiiiiiiddddddeeeee, baby, ride." "My husband passed away four years ago, and we were looking at bikes before he passed away. We were going to get our bikes together. So I'm about to get my frst now. Now I'm ready. I still think about him every day. He's proud of me every day. Sixteen years. It would have been 20 this year." "May I ask what happened?" "Massive heart attack, Xmas Eve. It still bothers me every day, but I'm good. We're good. Four kids and six grandbabies. He left me a lot of love." Photographer Nerissa Sparkman captures the scene Wednesday at KingFish on River Road and at Barret Bar, Thursday at Texas Roadhouse on Dixie Highway. GLIMPSE Bike Nights "To be totally honest, it's kind of cheesy, but: seeing Tom Cruise in Top Gun when he had his little motorcycle. And then also The Matrix when Trinity was on that Ducati. That kind of got me into the mood of really wanting to ride."
