LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.15 27 Below the Surface baptistlouisvilleheartsurgery.com The Louisville Dive Center — renamed from the Louisville Dive Shop when owners Ray Scott and Kevin Clifford took over in the early '80s — has turned shoreline spectators into underwater explorers for decades. "Our main business is training divers," Scott says. "Next week we have a trip to Bonaire, off the coast of Venezuela." The 69-year-old boasts a passport full of sunshine and depth: the Caribbean, annual sailboat trips to the Bahamas. "In the past 30 years, we've been all over the world, from diving (to see) WWII shipwrecks in the South Pacifc to Cuba," he says. Sign up for the basic open water SCUBA- certifcation class — about $500 or $600, after purchasing basic equipment — and you can join him. Takes three steps. "First: the academics," Scott says. Think back to a pop quiz; now submerge it. Second: a dip in a local pool. ("We moved over to (the current location near Louisville Male High School) with the intention of building our own pool, but the economy never let us," Scott says.) Third: a real-world open water diving experience, likely at Dale Hollow Lake in southern Kentucky or, during the cold Kentucky winter, Florida, which adds travel costs. The center also sells and services diving equipment and offers training in rescue diving, advanced diving, snorkeling and more. Classes are small, no more than 10 people per. "Six to eight months we have two classes per month, weekend schedules and weeknight schedules," Scott says. "Then we have fexible scheduling. We meet your schedule, but you pay more." Makes sense, right? Dive on your own time and dime. — Meghan Coomes Hagedorn The Louisville Dive Center
