LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.15 25 WHY LOUISVILLE? Photo by Marty Pearl Why does the annual Zombie Attack, now in its 11th year, take place in August? Shouldn't it be closer to Halloween or something? Every Aug. 29, to be exact. That night, a horde of people in gory costumes assemble at the Mid-City Mall in the Highlands and lurch down a closed portion of Bardstown Road, toward Grinstead and a demented block party near host bar the Highlands Taproom. (A zombie clutching a wailing chainsaw — yes, even without the chain — is always terrifying.) Co- founder John King explains the origin: "Ten years ago, a friend of mine named Lyndi and I realized we had the same birthday, August 29th, and thought to have a birthday party together at the Hideaway Saloon on Bardstown Road, which a mutual friend managed. I was watching a ton of zombie movies at the time, and I thought it would be fun to have zombie partygoers jump out at 8:29 p.m. on 8/29 and run down the street. "So I drew up this really bad map of Bardstown Road with an X over the Hideaway and an arrow that said 'Attack!' I had them printed up on business cards and handed them out at the door of Cahoots, where I was a bouncer at the time. How people deciphered my crazy scrawling I'll never know." King estimates 92 people showed up for the frst Zombie Attack. He says the crowd last year was about 35,000. — Amy Talbott gocards.com
