ment. "People are saying, 'Let's remodel; let's add on,' rather than selling (their homes) for less than they have in them," Perkins observes. Te Mays moved to a 900-square-foot house in Camp Taylor for the duration, but Jay managed to be on the job site near- ly every day. He requested a tweak here and a tweak there on items ranging from electrical-outlet placement to bumping the master bedroom out an extra six inches to fit the wingback bed Laura purchased from Arhaus. Tough Laura's job as a University of Louisville Hospital labor and delivery nurse made daily site inspections impossible, she spent hours shopping for the many items the addition required. She counts Ferguson Enterprises on Poplar Level Road as a fa- vorite destination for plumbing and build- ing products and T.J. Maxx as her go-to source for home decor. Te self-professed "Maxxinista" says she's shopped there once a week for the past two years. Agonizing over decisions — they did all the decorating themselves, Jay says — combined with the birth of their second daughter, Alexis, in 2010, strung the proj- [76] LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.12 ect out for 15 months. Tey moved back into their house in May of this year. Although their new kitchen is the same size as the original, strategic planning al- lowed them to add an island, dishwasher and microwave. Floor-to-ceiling, mahog- any-stained alder cabinets made by Scott Richardson of Richardson's Wood Crafters in Fairdale increased their storage space, too. By adding cabinets to the eating area in the great room, Laura was finally able to unpack dishes that had been boxed-up in the basement for years. HGTV inspired the great room's glass- mosaic-tile fireplace, as well as the mir- rored and glass shelves in the bookcases. Tough the fireplace wasn't in the original plans, it's now the room's focal point. "It's our contemporary edge," Jay says proudly. Rusk hand-painted clouds on the ceiling to match the ceilings in the living and dining rooms. In the master suite, Laura chose a serene aqua for the bedroom walls and a matching glass-beaded paper for the makeup area. Mirrored furniture from T.J. Maxx adds shine. Jay calls the bath the "Venetian spa," in Leaded-glass and Solatube light in the walk-in closet, and the upstairs playroom for daughters Alexis (left) and Maggie.
