brewmaster Jeremy Hunt. BBC GO TO BLUEGRASS BREWING CO. (636 E. Main St.) Drink: Dark Star Porter. Our barkeep called it "heaven in a mug," and if heaven is anything like this porter, we're gonna be good. This isn't one of your smoky porters that taste as if you're drinking soot from a campfire. (Ah, a soupcon of blackened weenie, with hints of torched marshmallow.) The Dark Star is robust and malty, yes, but it's smooth, too, especially when served ice cold — which may be a no-no for beer snobs but works with the Dark Star. Sit: At the cushioned church pews in the corner near the entrance. (Don't be tempted to turn on the nearby TV.) If you're solo, sit at the bar — the wooden top features old beer coasters under a layer of shellac — where you're guaranteed to find a friendly conversation. Check out: The brewery-ana on the walls, featuring oldies Falls City, Fehr's, Oertel's and Silo. And you can't beat this for art: shotgun-blasted beer kegs hanging from the ceiling. Why is the beer trend here now? "One reason is because we have been educating the local public for more than 18 years now on craft-brewed beer," says BBC co-owner Pat Hagan. "The people of Louisville can tell when a beer style is correct or there are problems in a beer; therefore, the local breweries have to produce a quality product. Another reason for the growth is it is a local product. People are starting to buy, shop and eat local, so that only encourages the sales of local micro- brewed beers." What's in Hagan's fridge? BBC's American Pale Ale. GO TO NEW ALBANIAN BREWING CO. BANK STREET BREWHOUSE (415 Bank St., New Albany, Ind.) Before you arrive: Clean your growlers. Drink: NABC's Hoptimus. This hop-filled IPA packs a punch, weighing in at 10.7 percent ABV and 100 IBUs. Sit: At the custom concrete bar, inlaid with lighted, circu- lar tiles. Eat: Pommes frites with lavender oil, bacon horseradish and pesto aioli. Before you leave: Fill up your growlers. (Fun fact: In Indi- ana on Sundays, a brewery is the only place to buy beer and take it home.) [42] LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.12
