[ Circuit ] 21 Questions With… Hedgespeth 29, Derby City Chop Shop owner and master barber Illustration by Rachel Koops Earliest childhood memory? "Not sure if it's my earliest, but my kindergarten teacher was named Ms. Tabb and she drank Tab constantly. Still seems a little contrived to me." Best book you've read over the past year? "Even Monsters Need Haircuts, by Matthew McElligott. I have a 10-month- old so my reading has definitely taken a new direction." What song's been stuck in your head lately? "My brain is a fully functional jukebox that rarely gets stuck on any one song for longer than an hour or so. However, the entire Rocket From the Crypt catalog has been stuck on my iPod for months." When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? "I should make up some cheesy story about loving to watch barbers cut hair when I was little, but supposedly I had aspirations of being a garbage man, then later a music producer. I ended up somewhere in between." The weirdest place somebody has recognized you in public? "At Radio City Music Hall I ran into someone whose hair I cut. Pretty wild." In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job? "Work alongside some super-talented dudes who also happen to be my friends, cultivating an atmosphere unique to our WE LOVE Oh, mini-football helmet vending machine, how we have missed feeding you quarters. Your recent return — at Kroger, just in time for the Super Bowl this month in Indianapolis — recalls bygone days when the Colts were in Baltimore and mini-helmets required "assembly." Back then, a kid had to pop on the facemask and oh-so-carefully stick on the helmet decals, which led to many an upside-down logo. The new mini-helmets come fully assembled, but beware: The mini-helmet gods remain fickle. The editor of this magazine has emptied the change in his car futilely trying to collect his favorite team, the Minnesota Vikings, though he can now field squads of Jets and Jaguars. Ugh. You'd at least think Bengals helmets would be in abundance. [12] LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.12 city and the world of barbershops through music, art and the most meticulous haircuts and shaves you've ever experienced." Benedictine? "Probably only had it a handful of times and honestly can't remember what it tastes like. Let's talk hummus." Favorite possession? "I'd have a real hard time choosing an odds-on favorite, but it would probably end in a photo finish between my record collection and my phone. Or my guitars. Maybe my laptop." Favorite local sports team? "I'm not a big sports guy, but I think more people should know that U of L has a hockey team — and rugby, for that matter." All-time favorite Louisville restaurant? "I'd probably be embarrassed to know the actual number of times my wife and I have eaten at Maido." All-time favorite Kentucky Derby winner? "His name was Barbaro, and I heard Barber-O. I think he was the only Derby winner I ever picked." Can't-miss TV show? "Workaholics. If you haven't caught it, do so ASAP." Biggest guilty pleasure in Louisville? "Definitely past the guilt stage, but I've had a chocolate-chip cookie from Please & Thank You for breakfast most mornings for months now. You've never eaten one that good, I promise you." Fleur-de-lis: had enough or can't get enough? "Eh, tough call. I'm definitely somewhere in between, but it's pretty disgusting to see one upside-down in foil print on a T-shirt…." What tattoos do you have? "More than I care to describe or show." If forced to get a tattoo today, what would you get? "Probably Taz riding a dolphin in and out of a tribal arm band with kanji on either side and my name in Old English. Either that or a traditional piece with my son's name." Last live performance you saw in Louisville? "The Pixies at the Palace. Incredible." What film has had the greatest influence on your life? "I never get tired of the Back to the Future trilogy. It introduced me to Huey Lewis, and I can only hope scientists are diligently working on hover-board technology." Fill in the blank: " _________'s Louisville" should be the next banner on the side of a building. "Rob Riggle (The Hangover, The Daily Show). And the image should be a still from The Goods of him playing video games in bed." What's something nobody knows about you? "Sixth-grade regional spelling bee champion." Which famous Louisvillian has the best hair? "A young Wilson Pickett had a pretty incredible pompadour. And at times, Johnny Unitas, who played football at U of L, had a pretty sick flattop, though I'd bet he never went to the same barber because it was too inconsistent." Adam
