Their names are Magellan and Clark. thebit Photo by Lynn Hafele 1900 Kentucky Distilleries & Warehouse Co. buys the land next door to its whiskey warehouse, one of the largest in the world at that time. 1907 A cafeteria for warehouse workers is built. 1927 Kentucky Distilleries rebrands itself as American Medicinal Spirits during Prohibition. 1935 With Prohibition over, the company changes its name to National Distillers Products Co. and commissions murals to be painted on the walls. The cafeteria is an occasional practice space for traveling jazz bands that headline at the Brown and Seelbach hotels. 1971 The property forecloses. 1975 National Distillers buys the building back but soon loses the property again due to fnancial diffculties. 1992 Burdorf-Kessler buys the property, presumably for furniture storage. 1998 Headliners Music Hall purchases the building, uncovering those jazz-age murals. 1999 A pre-worldwide- fame My Morning Jacket rocks the place. 2000 The Flaming Lips, Linkin Park and Modest Mouse are among the major bands that come through. And My Morning Jacket a bunch more times, too. 2013 Experimental hip- hop group Death Grips perform at Headliners and the author of this piece loses his mind in the front row. Also, the venue saves the day when it hosts a rained-out WFPK Waterfront Wednesday.
