148 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 10.14 1 Wednesday The Taste of Innovation at Churchill Downs brings food and drinks from local favorites as part of the IdeaFestival. 2 Thursday IF Film (formerly the Flyover Film Festival) includes documentary Stray Dog, about a biker veteran who tries to make peace with life (various locations, Sept. 30-Oct. 4). 3 Friday The St. Xavier vs. Trinity high school football game — a nearly 60-year rivalry — typically draws close to 40,000 people to Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The St. James Court Art Show in Old Louisville hosts more than 750 artists from throughout the coun- try (Oct. 3-5). The UnFair, a response to St. James, includes only local art at the Mag Bar (Oct. 3-5). 4 Saturday NBA teams the New Orleans Pelicans (Anthony "fear the brow" Davis!) and the Miami Heat (without LeBron!) play an exhibition game at the Yum! Center. Week in the Highlands kicks off with a 5K run/walk and includes music fests (Oct. 4-12). Paddle, row, sail, canoe or kayak down the Ohio River from Westport to West Point in the Louisville 50, which is joined by the Mayor's Cup — a 22-mile race from Westport to downtown Louisville. Squallis Puppeteers perform Goodnight, Monster. 5 Sunday Louder Than Life music festival at Champions Park features '90s rockers Korn, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, Papa Roach and more, plus "gourmet man food" (from Lil Cheezers, the Monkey Wrench and Rye, to name three) and artist-inspired bourbon drinks (Oct. 4 & 5). 6 Monday Last day to register to vote — including changing addresses or names — for the Nov. 4 election. No big races this year, though. 7 Tuesday Broadway show I Love Lucy at the Kentucky Center (Oct. 7-12). 8 Wednesday Unlimited samples from your favorite restaurants at the Taste of Louisville at Louisville Executive Aviation — a giant airplane hangar at Bowman Field. Tune-Yards, an eclectic vocal- and percussion-driven band (including former Louisville Leopard Percussionist Dani Markham) at Headliners. Rock/punk band AFI at Mercury Ballroom. 9 Thursday David Gray at the Palace. Walking the Tightrope fall fashion show at Mellwood Art Center. Jack O'Lantern Spectacular displays more than 5,000 works of art, er, pumpkins at Iroquois Park (Oct. 9-Nov. 2). The Louisville International Film Festival screens flms at various locations and includes the Somerset, Ky.- based documentary American Cheerleader (Oct. 9-11). 1 0 Friday Outskirts Festival at the New Vintage is a weekend of all-female and female-fronted bands and includes a separate Rockshop to encourage and teach girls to play music (Oct. 10-12). The Garvin Gate Blues Festival is a free outdoor festival in Old Louisville at Garvin and Oak streets (Oct. 10 & 11). The Caufelds Halloween parade starts at the Baxter Avenue Morgue and goes through the Highlands. 1 1 Saturday The Portland Art and Heritage Fair includes art cars, food trucks and music at various locations. Pig and Swig barbecue fest at Fourth Street Live. Tim Burton's Beetlejuice showing in Emerson Park. Real Homeland Security: Food, Health and Community is the theme of this year's Healthy Food, Local Farms conference and harvest party at Kentucky Country Day (Oct. 10-11). 1 2 Sunday Harvest Homecoming festival includes a parade, farmers' mar- kets, crafts and food in New Albany, Ind. (Oct. 4-12). Bill Cosby at the Palace. 1 3 Monday "Small Worlds" exhibits abstract photographer Margaret Oechsli at Paul Paletti Gallery (Oct. 2-Dec. 29). 1 4 Tuesday Eight boats come together from as far as Galveston, Texas, for the Centennial Festival of Riverboats on the Ohio River, celebrating our beloved Belle's birthday (Oct. 14-19). Mötley Crüe and Alice Cooper at the Yum! Center. 1 5 Wednesday At the U of L Hite Art Institute, "Deep Ecology: New Work by Ying Kit Chan" shows industrial landscapes alongside plant life in acrylic and photographic/mixed media interpretations of the ideas of Muir, Thoreau, Carson and other nature writers (Oct. 3-31). 1 6 Thursday The Avett Brothers play the frst of three nights at the Palace (Oct. 16-18). Little Dragon, who has toured and recorded with Gorillaz and appeared at this year's Bonnaroo, play at Mercury Ballroom. 1 7 Friday Brewfest at Slugger Field. Pink Prom, a Susan G. Komen beneft ball with lots of dancing, is at Mellwood Art Center. The Hardin County Schools performing arts center collaborates with the Kentucky Center for Stories We Carry, a discussion about the impact that war has on all citizens. 1 8 Saturday Comedian Mike Epps at the Yum! Center. The Louisville Orches- tra does a Louis Armstrong tribute at the Kentucky Center. Fall activities such as pumpkin painting and a hay maze at Bernheim Forest's ColorFest (Oct. 18 & 19). 1 9 Sunday At the Cathedral of the Assumption, Louisville Master Chorale dedicates Bach's Ein Feste Burg to Melvin Dickinson, who found and led the Louisville Bach Society for 47 years. 2 0 Monday Break for a #psl. The Ur- ban Bourban Trail is now a race — the half marathon goes from downtown to the Highlands and back and ends with cocktails. Annual Halloween celebration in Brown Park.
