LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 10.14 147 My Playlist Jaxon Swain, 33, is vice president of sonaBLAST! Records, which recently released Belle 100: Steamboat Songs to celebrate (and raise money for) the Belle of Louisville on its 100th birthday. Local bands from the Pass to Leigh Ann Yost to the Ladybirds (Swain is the bassist) recorded tracks. For more on the Belle's birthday bash, see page 46. "Fernando," ABBA "ABBA is so magical, and here they are at their peak. I can't help it. The harmonies are so gorgeous. The nostalgic Rio Grande battle narrative via English-speaking, Swedish international '70s rock stars is just too good." Amarcord (Soundtrack), Nino Rota "Walk around at night listening to this and you start to imagine everyone as Fellini characters. It's so fun!" "Bambino," Plastic Bertrand "This weirdo world/new wave stomper never gets old. Defnitely a late-night favorite." "Almost Ready," the Normals "I got into this from a compilation on Soul Jazz Records called Punk 45: Kill the Hippies! Kill Yourself! The American Nation Destroys Its Youth. This song has the energy of 'Search and Destroy' but with a less depraved (dare I say?) positive message. Love the vocals." Calypso, Harry Belafonte "I listen to this all the time. It's nice in the morning, or you can have a party and just keep fipping it. Belafonte's voice and delivery are just so amazing, and the songs — you have the beautiful folk songs and then the big-band ravers." (Daylight come and me wan' go home — Ed.) gocards.com
