12 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 10.14 LouisvilleLip West End stories I loved "The Portland Puzzle" (August) by Dylon Jones, with photos by Aaron Kingsbury, because the story captured the essence of the neighbor- hood and the complexity of how economic development in the area affects the community. Although I grew up in Shively, my family has had businesses in the Portland area for generations, originally at the corner of 15th Street and Portland Avenue and still on Main Street be- tween 23rd and 24th streets. Hopefully economic development in Portland will make life better for all while preserving the neighborhood's unique sense of place. In the August Style and Fashion section, I loved the Dirt Bowl basketball tournament photos ("Hot Town") by Amber Garvey, Justin Philalack and Adam Wolffbrandt. It is great to see street-ball fashion from West Louisville. I tore the article out to show it to my teenage daughter Cayley. She's a sophomore at Sacred Heart and knows good style. Thank you for giving West Louisville's fashion such a cool shout-out, making the style as worthy of bragging rights as the teams on the court. Please keep the West Louisville stories coming! Colleen Crum Lives "near the Krispy Kreme on Bardstown Road" From Pastor Phelps Thank you for publishing "Deliver Me" (Septem- ber), senior writer Anne Marshall's brutally honest story about Linsey Crider and Martha Williams during their time living at a drug-treatment facility for pregnant women. Their stories are replicated countless times over in our city, each with its own tragic twist. I hope your story heightens our com- munity's awareness and inspires creative ways to come alongside people winding their way out of the addiction abyss.
