It was a cold winter in Louisville this year, but two of the worst winters of the past half-century produced the last two Triple Crown winners. Afer a snowy winter of '77, Seatle Slew few through the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. A year later, Louisville was iced deep for months, but on the frst Saturday in May Afrmed beat Alydar, and also went on to take the Triple Crown. PROPER PRONUNCIATION IS OPTIONAL. A special visitor for the 1930 Kentucky Derby was Lord Derby himself, the 17th of his noble line. Five generations previous, the 12th Lord Derby had established the Epsom Derby in 1780. That's the English classic upon which the Kentucky Derby is paterned. Lord Derby especially enjoyed Gallant Fox's triumph that year, and he hailed the horse and its connections in the winner's circle. He also chated with newspapermen, comparing the American racing spectacle with its British counterpart. One of the American writers asked Lord Derby to setle the question, once and for all, of how the word Derby should be pronounced: Is it durby or darby? "Both are correct," His Lordship said.
