The 1937 Flood didn't just rise over the banks along the Ohio River; it surged deep into much of the city, with water even reaching Churchill Downs. At the food's peak in late January 1937, the historic dirt track was completely underwater. Even as the water receded, the city was lef a sloggy mud bog, with thousands of homes destroyed and the streets litered with every manner of debris. The track had to dry out, too. At Churchill, one corner of the track near the six-furlong pole (around the frst turn from the clubhouse) was still submerged on May 1 — a week before the Derby. Workers drained the remaining water by hand, even down to using towels, then resurfaced the dirt course in time for the big race on May 8. War Admiral took the 63rd renewal wire-to-wire over a fast track. 44-63.indd 47 3/19/14 5:22 PM
