1 8 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 4.14 Where to take your… …roommate who's a Sigma Chi …in-laws from suburbia …business clients you're trying to impress …grandma who loves the movie Seabiscuit …older sister — and her three kids BRUNCH He may need a bloody Mary afer last night, when THE BARS NEVER CLOSED. Or try one of Against the Grain's (401 E. Main St.) beers brewed on site. At North End Cafe (1722 Frankfort Ave., 2116 Bardstown Road), try the pancake special or atempt to fnish the "hearty" breakfast. Good price, too, in case they don't foot the bill. They'll get why we're a foodie town at Harvest (624 E. Market St.). She'll actually be able to hear the conversation over omelets and toasted baguetes at Blue Dog Bakery and Cafe (2868 Frankfort Ave.). Chocolate croissants, too. Though the name is Wild Eggs (several area locations), the kids will love the sugar high from the French toast, wafes, crepes and pancakes. LUNCH He loves B-Dubs, we know, but he'll love the wings (and beer) at Cumberland Brews (1576 Bardstown Road) even more. In the heart of downtown, Atlantic No. 5 (605 W. Main St.) has a modern-urban feel and excellent sandwiches (pulled-pork, grilled cheese). The Village Anchor (11507 Park Road, in Anchorage) shows of Louisville's small-town charm and some of the historic homes. It's hard to pass up the burger at Shady Lane Cafe (4806 Brownsboro Road), and she'll love the potato salad. If another sit-down meal is out of the question, order take-out from Relish (1346 River Road) and head to Waterfront Park. A MAIN ATTRACTION OTHER THAN THE DERBY He's dying to get a picture in front of the giant bat at the Louisville Slugger Museum (800 W. Main St.) — and post it on Instagram. The top of Iroquois Park (no, keep going — yes, that top) ofers the best view of the city. Schedule a tasting at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience (528 W. Main St.) at Louisville's historic Whiskey Row. Obviously the Derby Museum (704 Central Ave.). And she'll love the Muhammad Ali Center (144 N. Sixth St.) because, well, it's all about Ali. Everybody loves Ali. During the First Friday Trolley Hop, free trollies will haul you around downtown and NuLu. She'll quit the snarky Kentucky jokes once she sees our stock of art galleries. A NON- TOURISTY MUST Let's face it, you won't have time to traipse through parks or museums when all a brother wants to do is party and mend a hangover with good eats. So: smoked pork ribs and duck-fat fries at Hammerheads (921 Swan St.). Walk through the Highlands. Stop in shops on Bardstown Road. Pick up a T-shirt even a local would wear at Why Louisville (1583 Bardstown Road). Admire the architecture on Cherokee Parkway and walk the loop in Cherokee Park. Take them to the 21c Museum Hotel (700 W. Main St.) and explore the modern art. Cave Hill Cemetery (701 Baxter Ave.) is more beautiful than any park in town, especially with many of its 500 varieties of trees and shrubs in bloom. Walk across the Big Four Bridge downtown at Waterfront Park. (Yes, the kids are geting tired.) DINNER Stop at a food truck in the parking lot at Apocalypse Brew Works (1612 Mellwood Ave.). Y'all don't have time to sit and lollygag. Eiderdown (983 Goss Ave.) will please both Mr. meat-and-potatoes and Mrs. nothing-with-a-face and give them a taste of Germantown. The only answer is Jack Fry's (1007 Bardstown Road). Shrimp and grits. The deal you were trying to seal? Just sealed it. The outdoor deck at Asiatique (1767 Bardstown Road) and Asian-fusion fare will have her raving about the place to her friends back home. You and sis can catch up over margaritas at El Mundo (2345 Frankfort Ave.) while your parents spend quality time with the grandchildren. Don't let her leave town without trying the fsh tacos. DRINKS He's turning into a bourbon expert (from those shots of Woodford Reserve) so take him to the Silver Dollar (1761 Frankfort Ave.). Take them to the Holy Grale (1034 Bardstown Road) for some of the best beer (and pretzel bread with beer cheese) around. St. Charles Exchange (113 S. 7th St.) screams good taste, with well- made cocktails and a comfortable bar. She'll get out her iPhone camera — which she just learned to use — to snap pics of the historic bar at the Seelbach (500 S. 4th St.). The incredible outdoor patio at Garage Bar (700 E. Market St.) is kid-friendly, but let's hope the kids are still with Grandma. NIGHTLIFE Try Gerstle's Place (3801 Frankfort Ave.) or other bars along the St. Mathews strip. Or, OK, just this once: Fourth Street Live. Decca (812 E. Market St.) has live music on its to-die-for patio on Thursday nights. Sip on Manhatans as the band — piano included — plays hits on the elevated bar at Jef Ruby's (325 W. Main St.). And if you somehow still have room for a steak…. A block down from the Seelbach, Marketplace Restaurant at Theater Square (651 S. 4th St.) features jazz classics. If your sis wants to shake her groove thing, take her to Nowhere Bar (1133 Bardstown Road). (Hint: Akiko's, a karaoke bar, is next door, in case you haven't heard her do Salt-n- Pepa's "Whata Man" since high school.) YOU HAVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY COMING IN FOR DERBY. HERE'S HOW TO ENTERTAIN THESE FIVE TYPES OF OUT-OF-TOWNERS. By Mary Chellis Austin 12-16 TIPS 10-25.indd 18 3/20/14 11:30 AM
