Illustration by Steven Dana Favorite local sports team? "I follow the Skyline Crackers, an amateur softball team a friend plays for. They're sponsored by the Skyline Chili near my house." What's a local restaurant people would be surprised to know you've never eaten at? "I've never in my entire life eaten at McDonald's." What Louisville dish have you eaten more than any other? "Chicken pot pie from Lilly's." Derby or Oaks? "Never been to either. Northern Dancer (1964) was probably the last Derby winner I paid much attention to." Can't-miss TV show? "The Big Bang Theory. It's gratifying to see characters as socially dysfunctional as oneself." www.napariverlouisville.com Best book you've read over the past year? "Canada by Richard Ford moved me the most." Public or private school? "I got kicked out of Catholic school when I was 17, then fnished at a public school drop-outprevention program. A counselor at the public school helped me get into college and change the direction of my life, so I'm a big believer in the public schools." Biggest guilty pleasure in Louisville? "The buttermilk pie at Mark's Feed Store." Who's doing big things in Louisville and is fying under the radar? "Michael Gritton, director of Kentuckiana Works. He's doing great things for people in Louisville trying to fnd work." Benedictine? "Benedictine always struck me as something cooked up as bar food for St. Patrick's Day." Fill in the blank: "_________'s Louisville" should be the next banner on the side of a building. "'Everybody,' with pictures of Louisvillians." What's something nobody knows about you? "I once worked as a UPS driver." What makes somebody a Louisvillian? "When my wife Tomese and I moved here from Seattle, we noticed immediately that people here are quick to invite you to their homes, to make you part of their lives." What tattoos do you have? "None so far, but it's early yet. I'm thinking of getting one to celebrate the opening of the new Southwest Regional Library this summer. Probably something small and tasteful." www.loucol.com 2.14 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 23
