21Q's 21 questions Craig Buthod, "city librarian," is the director of the Louisville Free Public Library. He lives "right by the Daniel Boone statue at the entrance to Cherokee Park" and is "fast approaching 60." Earliest childhood memory? "Walking with my father up the steps of the Carnegie library in my hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma." www.ywclouisville.org What song's been stuck in your head lately? "Most likely something by Loudon Wainwright. He writes a lot about family and what it's like to be a man at different stages of life." When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? "A few years ago I came across the paperwork I flled out to take the PSAT exam at age 15. I had to choose a career objective, and I picked 'educational administrator.' That's pretty close to where I ended up, but really, what 15-year-old wants to be an educational administrator? That's just weird." The strangest place somebody has recognized you in public? "I was in downtown Indianapolis one time, and a man came up to me and said, 'Aren't you the library guy from Louisville?' Same thing happened once in a hotel lobby in Paris." Besides your current one, what's the best job you've ever had? "I worked in movie theaters when I was a teenager in the early 1970s, a truly spectacular time in American moviemaking. I got to see so many free movies — The Godfather, The French Connection, The Last Picture Show — that it's still hard for me to pay full price." Favorite possession? "My wedding ring, and not only for what it symbolizes. I designed it myself — a rare artistic expression for someone more inclined toward the left side of the brain." www.ypal.org/connect 22 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.14 All-time favorite Louisville athlete? "Tori Murden McClure, president of Spalding University and the frst woman to row solo across the Atlantic. When I frst met Tori at a party, I mentioned how I like to bicycle. She told me she had just bicycled home to Louisville from Buffalo, New York. Her concept of a nice ride is somewhat beyond mine."
