Number two on day one of the Big Four Bridge? That story, tonight at 11. Local news reporters rushed to cover the problem of dog owners not cleaning up afer their pets on the newly opened pedestrian and bicycle bridge. With zingy one-liners — something stinks on Louisville's newest atraction — reporters covered this drama all the way up to its crappy (shoot, it's contagious!) end — a dog ban. A far more complex bridge story that's in the news, press conference by press conference, is the Ohio River Bridges Project. In 2013, construction on the new downtown and East End bridges began. It seems the $2.6 billion project will forge ahead, perhaps sealing this city's reliance on cars and addiction to sprawl. The toll troll is coming! When the new Ohio River bridges open in 2016, it will cost drivers anywhere from $1 to $12 to cross them and the Kennedy, depending on how frequently you commute and the size of your vehicle. Oh, and those rates are expected to rise every year. Not surprisingly, a study came out showing that trafc is expected to increase on the toll-free Sherman Minton. You know, the one that's crumbling. And with that construction? Trafc! Break out the magnifying glass and you may spot a snarl of miniature cars bumper to bumper here. You may also notice some stink bugs crawling on top of those cars. Rain doused this year's Forecastle Festival, delaying festivities Saturday and sending Sunday crowds scrambling for cover just as Robert Plant was about to rock old . . . err, we mean rock out. Come to think of it, the rain gods hit Louisville hard this whole year, shortening the St. James Court Art Show and dampening Derby. 12.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 59
