RETRO RAMA 2013 IN REVIEW By Anne Marshall & Suki Anderson Here at Louisville Magazine, we appreciate art. Every month we commission an original painting or drawing for placement just before our food and arts sections. Local illustrators and photographers elegantly dress our stories, and this year we published an issue devoted to the arts. And yet, in this magazine's 64-year history, space on its pages has never been devoted to a medium that most relegate to their elementaryschool years, a medium that requires minimal skill, just a trip down the school-supply aisle at Walgreens and time to kill: the diorama. Traced back to its Greek roots, diorama means "through that which is seen" — at least that's what Wikipedia says. Our only rule for the endeavor you see here? No rules, like a backyard brawl at a craf table. We started with facts and let the imagination create, or re-create, as is ofen the case with dioramas. So here's our retrospective on events in 2013, as told through 1970s-era Barbie dolls, toy horses, paper cutouts, a broken fax machine, glue sticks and double-stick tape. Lots of double-stick tape. We're sure we've missed some key happenings. But, hey, this is our frst go. So enjoy, Louisville. Hope to meet you back here for a three-dimensional trip through 2014. 56 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.13 Back in January, this kitschy pancake post abruptly shut its doors afer more than two decades. Owner Lynn Winter says a batle with shingles caused the closure. Lest we forget, there was a media storm surrounding Winter's controversial (and legally questionable) mandate that all servers carry $100 in cash to tip out support staf, which coincided with the closure. With its giant foaming cofee cup and stable of colorful animals, a realistic replica of Lynn's threatened to overtake the diorama. Hence the minimalist approach. Louisville native and staple of men's fantasies, Jennifer Lawrence, wins the Oscar! Her performance in Silver Linings Playbook solidifed this talented 23-year-old's spot on Hollywood's A-list. But watch your back, Jen! A creeper's behind you! In September, Han Cong Zhao of Vancouver, British Colombia, was arrested and charged for sending hundreds of threatening texts and voicemails to Lawrence's family. Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin lounges on a couch. Or is it a hot seat? This year Shanklin dominated headlines afer the Courier-Journal frst reported that her taxpayer-funded upholsterytraining program intended for ex-felons mostly benefted Shanklin's friends and relatives. An ethics trial followed. But the Metro Council ultimately decided Shanklin could retain (but not reupholster) her council seat.
