A Preston Street and Burnett Avenue www.afusa.com 26 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.13 ll right, it's not really a crossroads, seeing as CSX railroad tracks and a demolished roadbed separate Burnett Avenue at Preston Street and Preston at Burnett, but it most certainly once was a much-used intersection before commerce turned it into a godforsaken wasteland. Today, if you're heading south on Preston from downtown toward Eastern Parkway, your only recourse when you reach Burnett is to take a right, then a left at Brook, a left at Hill and then a right back onto Preston. No big deal. But now let's say you're on Eastern Parkway and you're trying to get to Galerie Hertz on Preston in the Shelby Park neighborhood and you're not real familiar with the street "grid" around Germantown. You can't take Preston north because it's one-way south at Eastern, so you go one street over and take Shelby Street, fguring you'll cut over to Preston down the road apiece. You might take the left at Lynn Street and fnd out that Preston is a block away and two-way from there. Groovy. Or you might wait until Burnett Avenue for the left and learn that Preston is now a half-mile west. Either way, you're in a minor predicament when you hit that dead end at the CSX tracks. So you continue west on Burnett, which has become Hill Street; you'll take a right at Floyd. No you won't — Floyd doesn't intersect with Hill. So, OK, Brook Street then. You take the right on Brook and look for the next convenient right over to Preston. Don't take Magnolia or you'll end up on I-65 south. Don't take Woodbine; it's one-way west. So fnally you fnd a capable right on Ormsby Avenue, drive under the freeway and arrive at Preston — but it's one-way south and the gallery is a couple of blocks north. So you take a short right/left jag on Ormsby to Jackson, then north two blocks to Shelby Parkway, then west a block to Preston. Take a left and park; you're there. Piece of cake, wasn't it — but with salt in place of sugar. — JW
