bit the CITY sentence. in a Heard of any good hoops games on the 28th? Spine Tinglers Did you notice? On the spine of the magazine each month this past year, we printed a telling quote from that issue. If you read your spine, this match game should be easy. If not, well, it'll still be fun. Match the quote to the issue: A. January 1. "If art is too easy, it's pablum for the masses." Kenneth Hayden, 55, painter and photographer 2. "It's cool, everybody! He's not ABC!" Erika Wilkes, UPS employee 3. "I never played with dolls. I was a mud kid." Jocelyn Salinas, 17, welder 4. "Money, baby. Money." Jeremiah "Frog" Williams, 35, construction worker 5. "Neigh." Mine That Bird, 7, winner of the 2009 Kentucky Derby 6. "Giving directions using landmarks that no longer exist." Summer Auerbach, 31, COO of Rainbow Blossom Natural Food Markets 7. "Where do you start, man? Where?" Eric Hansberry, 45, barber, New T and B Classic Cuts Barbershop 8. "I like sick people. The sicker you are, the more interesting you are to me." Mary Barry, internist 9. "I have always wanted to eat a tiger." Ryan Brown, Crossft trainer 10. "I have six colleges in mind. Follow along with me — Princeton, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford or U of L." Murari Srinivasan, ffth-grader, Brandeis Elementary 11. "I grew up on smoked sturgeon, cow's tongue, pickled pig's feet . . . bull-foot soup." Jim Gerhardt, chef, Limestone 12. "A horse-sized duck? I'd rather fght a hundred duck-sized horses." ODDS-ON FAVORITE 14 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.13 betting window Upside: Besides up-and-comers Beyoncé (Dec. 12) and Justin Timberlake (Dec. 15) at the Yum!, the entire December events calendar looks like an explosion at a candy-cane factory. Quick story: In the car on Nov. 1, we fipped on the radio. Gen X-FM had already made its chestnuts-roasting transformation into Gen Xmas Radio. The. Day. After. Halloween. Ever since, we've had this weird yuletide orgy playing in our head. "Feliz Navidad." "Last Christmas, I gave you my heart." "War is over / If you want it." That one by Mariah Carey. Downside: Eh, we kinda like it. FLASH BACK Louisville Magazine Vol. 46/No. 12 December 1995 On the cover: Readers got a glimpse into the life of hometown "superstar" and cover subject Joan Osborne. (See if she landed on our list of the top 25 Louisville bands of all time, beginning on page 48.) Songs from her debut album were ubiquitous on the radio. (We just got the lyric "What if God was one of us?" stuck in your head, didn't we? Sorry.) To help with seasonal shopping, we provided a "High-Impact Holiday Gift Guide." Green-pepper lamp, anyone? Inside: A former editor's Christmas story on the last page of the issue took a surprising turn that upset readers. (Warning: Not for children! Or those with weak stomachs.) See our updated, politically correct and wholesomely edited version on page 104. Outside: December 1995 saw the birth of future Olympic medalists Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney, the latter of the infamous "not impressed" face. Also in the news, Dean Martin left his earthly Rat Pack to join a more heavenly group of crooners. In world affairs, the Dayton Agreement, which put an end to the war in Bosnia, was signed in Paris, and Elizabeth II began her advance to put an end to the marriage between Prince Charles and Diana, though the divorce would not be fnalized for several more months. BYE-BYE 2013 HAIKU Oh, Twenty-Thirteen With your shutdowns and stink bugs. So long? Good riddance! REVIEW — Josh Moss
