Anessa Arehart, 44 Favorite medium: acrylic paints anessaarehart.weebly.com Arehart has a graphic style reminiscent of street art, and we love her irreverent feminism. Describe your style. "Pop-folk gender commentary." Who is your biggest artistic infuence? "My grandmother. Not because she was an artist but because my paintings remind me of her." We've asked you to design a cover for Louisville Magazine that sums up the city. What would you do? "A big pink brain hinged with the hatch open, vintage mopeds, rainbows and banjos shooting out of it." Finish this sentence: If I weren't an artist, I'd … "share the stories in my head by writing off-off-Broadway musicals. Lucky for you, I'm a painter." What is the frst piece of art you remember creating? "In kindergarten we traced our bodies on big sheets of paper, creating self-portraits. I drew myself wearing hot-pink pants with pierced ears. I possessed neither, but both would manifest eventually." What are you trying to say through your work? "Few things are more attractive than a strong, passionate woman using the correct fork." Anessa Arehart How much time do you spend in the studio each week? "I'll pull marathon studio sessions when I'm inspired by a particular idea, but once everything's roughed-out on canvas, I take my time developing the actual paintings. No set hours — just as long as it takes." From top: "Kiss the Snake" (detail); "The Honeymooners Go Camping"; "Rollerhead Gene" (all acrylic on canvas).
