style & fashion Randy & Susan Pretty Gritty Louisville's Street Style Blog Randy Peters (left), 65, lives in St. Matthews, belongs to a singing group and volunteers at her church. Susan Moremen, 65, lives in the Highlands and consults for nonproft organizations. Photographed at Wiltshire Bakery and Cafe at 901 Barret Ave. How would you describe your personal style? Moremen: "I would call it casual chic. I try to be out there a little bit. I play with colors, and I try to wear things no one else wears. I like to mix really good, well-designed clothes with casual shirts, T-shirts." Peters: "I'm more traditional. Every once in a while I try to emulate (Moremen) a little bit, but I don't ever get there." Favorite fashion icon or designer? Moremen: "I like Armani, Jil Sander. I love J Crew. My fashion icon is Coco Chanel, because she was casual and chic, and a little outrageous." Peters: "I don't think I'd ever match, but I always adored Audrey Hepburn's look. It's not something I ever attempted to achieve, but I always loved her style. My mother sold a Doncaster line of clothes for 35 or 40 years, so I have a number of those items in my closet." Favorite places to shop? Moremen: "I shop online, J Crew, and I shop when I travel. I shop at Rodes too. Another great place is Discoveries. Great costume jewelry, and great quirky casual clothes. Big clunky necklaces, inexpensive." Peters: "I'll go to Dillard's for shoes. There are fun things at Stein Mart. I'd love to go back to AlterEGO; I bought something there that I love." Is there a fashion era you wish would come back? Moremen: "The only reason I would say no is because everything is so comfortable now, but I do love the way people dressed in the Cole Porter movie (De-Lovely), the '20s and '30s." Peters: "A more contemporary Downton Abbey. I can remember my mother's clothes from the '50s and I always wished we had been able to keep at least one or two of her gowns and cocktail dresses. But comfort was not part of the scene — like girdles; we don't want to be doing that. But I loved those fashions." Moremen: "I like the new clothes that men wear. Well-dressed men still look good." Is there a style rule that you follow, or love to break? Moremen: "I use Randy's mother's style rule: When you are ready to go, look in the mirror and take one thing off. Her mother was very stylish. Or, I'll wear a tulle shirt and boots with it, or a polo shirt with a tulle skirt. I don't think I have many rules." Peters: "I don't have any rules, so I don't think I break any. I don't live by any rules." What is your favorite thing in your closet? Moremen: "I have a winter white wool dress from The Row. It's fabulous. I love The Row. It's my absolute favorite. I wear it with bright blue shoes." Peters: "I have things that I've had for 20, 30 years that are just classic. Suits, sweaters. I have a pair of shoes that I bought in the '70s from Goldies, a wonderful shoe store that used to be on Preston Street, that still ft. I have one dress for the summer that I've worn forever. It's a beautiful periwinkle blue, slightly A-line. I love the color, and it's really fattering." Moremen: "When you get older …" Peters: "… which we aren't really …" Moremen: "… you just do what you like to do and you don't worry about what other people think. I have a much more secure sense of myself. You know what looks good on you."
