& Architecture design Free Beauty A barn raising that raises the architectural bar By Jon Lee Cope Photos by Ted Tarquinio The Place: Mason Lane Farms Operational Facility in Goshen, Ky. Owner: Eleanor Bingham Miller Architects: Roberto de Leon and Ross Primmer (De Leon & Primmer Architecture Workshop) Completed: 2009 Cost: $821,361 Winner of the 2013 American Institute of Architects Honor Award E leanor Bingham Miller was already a fan of the work of architects Robert de Leon and Ross Primmer when she began thinking of consolidating operations on her 2,000acre farm in Goshen. Te Louisville-based frm of de Leon & Primmer had a reputation for being "the champions of the nonproft," having a knack for creating inspired design that cost less than $50 a square foot. Te team met in graduate school at Harvard, and their shared aesthetic has allowed for a partnership that has lasted more than 20 years. In her goal to be a "good steward of the land," Miller asked the frm to make any new structures ecologically sustainable. And, although she was looking for diferent design ideas, she wanted the outbuildings to "feel like Kentucky." 86 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.13
