bit A CLOSER What did you buy at the market? Photos and interviews by Olivia Harlow from a weekend at the Flea Off Market, Jefferson Street and Baxter Avenue. 1 2 1. Chelsey May, 28, creator of Crazy Amazing Kokedamas, sells her hanging Japanese moss balls — aka, "lovingly hand-sewn orb garden sculptures" — for $15. "They are almost like their own little tiny sculptures," she says. "They look like tiny planets that are selfsustaining. I even have some that will have rolliepollies in them that we decided to let stay." 2. Lory Adams, 51, and Chuck Adams, 58, bought a $3 Mr. Potato Head and a $10 dress. Chuck Adams says the Mr. Potato Head is for his fouryear-old grandson: "He collects those. He's probably got over 30 of them." "It looks like it'd be fun to wear," Lory Adams says of her vintage dress. "And it matches my glasses!" 3 4 3. Patricia Sweatt, "60-plus," bought pictures for 10 cents, 15 cents and 75 cents. "I always look for a good bargain," she says, "and so I bought some lovely pictures that I think will go well with my decor." 4. Stacy Lynn Gilbert, 24, bought a ring for $65 (left), and Melinda Beck, 24, bought a small coffeemug plant for $5 and a terrarium for $25 (right). "When I was in high school, I got a ring like this with my frst money ever — and I lost it," Gilbert says. "I bought a terrarium because I am helping my parents sell their house," Beck says, "and I really wanted to put something decorative in their kitchen and sort of jazz it up. I got (the coffee-mug plant) 'cause it was fve bucks. It's hand-painted. It's a hosta so I'll probably transplant it later." 5. William Rodgers, 63, bought a $20 birdcage. "I think we are gonna put a plant in it," he says, "or we might cut a few of these [metal lines] off and put a bird feeder in there to let the birds come into it and hang it outside." 6 5 6. Hayley Good, 12, bought $5 jellyfsh earrings. Hayley Good's mother says the inspiration for buying the earrings was a jellyfsh song, and she urged her daughter to sing it. Hayley, her sister and mom eventually formed a trio and sang this little ditty: "Jellyfsh, jellyfsh. Big ol' nasty fsh fsh. Jellyfsh. You take some jelly and you take some fsh. Put 'em on a sandwich and delish!" 7. Earl Beaver, 57, and Judy Donato, 51, bought a $125 antique fan. "It's a piece of history," Donato says. "They don't make things like they used to. It's cool. You actually feel the air pressure. It's like an air conditioner." "It lasted this long," Beaver adds, "so it's probably a good product." 8. Jefferson Richardson, 14, bought a $20 suitcase. "I want to make a table out of it," he says. 32 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.13 7 8
