Throw in an album release, comparisons to The Band's harmonies and a performance on a major cable show — all in less than two years? "It's like an out-of-body experience," says Katie Toupin, keys player/vocalist for New Albany quartet Houndmouth, which formed in late 2011. "We're in awe at how fast it's happening." Fresh off a European tour, Houndmouth and their soulful folk-rock sound are set for a scorching few months. The foursome just dropped their debut, From the Hills Below the City, and will play the summer festival circuit: Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival and Louisville's own Forecastle on July 12. "Onstage, we're all just into the music," says Toupin, 24, who frst began playing acoustic guitar at 17 and eventually switched to keyboard. "I don't get nervous anymore." So is fame already passé? "The music always came together naturally," Toupin says. "It's an unspoken thing — this is where the song should go." Still, all four couldn't hide the grins during their recent Conan appearance. "Bands try to look so jaded all the time," Toupin says, laughing. "But it is really cool and exciting.
