Courier-Journal food critic Marty Rosen once wrote that J. Harrod's is a white-noise free "old-school suburban sanctuary" with an old-school menu (prime rib, trout amandine, country ham with redeye gravy, Hot Brown) worth the trip. Which sounds ideal to many of us old-schoolers. Karem's Grill & Pub 9424 Norton Commons Blvd. // 3275646 karem.com The frst restaurant in Norton Commons, Karem's hosts a street party called "Sunset Thursdays" from late spring through early fall. F FACE·OF Shiraz Mediterranean Grill 2210 Holiday Manor // 426-9954 One of several locations around town, the kebobs here are delicious. Tea Station Chinese Bistro 9422 Norton Commons Blvd. // 4231202 teastationbistro.com Owner-chef Paul Yang and Amy Yang live above their restaurant — exhibit A for the "new urban design" of Norton Commons. And it seems to be working as Tea Station remains a popular eatery. Try the bubble tea. Cabela's (2013) 5100 Norton Healthcare Blvd. // 365-9020 cabelas.com Like the coming of Trader Joe's, this national chain was greatly anticipated by locals. Cale & Cole (2012) 9428 Norton Commons Blvd. // 412-9100 Owner Julie Mackenzie Moore, a jewelry-maker originally from California, offers her work and that of local artists. Frank Otte Nursery and Garden Center 7505 River Road // 228-5974 See Middletown/Lyndon entry. The Sewing Shop (2005) Derby Kane Webb Forecastle is three days instead of two minutes. Derby is like Christmas. It technically may be two minutes on one day but everybody knows it's a season that kicks off with Thunder. A two-week season? Forecastle began months ago when organizers sold early-birdspecial tix and dropped lineup hints — tons more anticipation. More anticipation? Oh, please. Besides, tradition trumps all. We just held Derby No. 139. Forecastle will be 11 next month. It's a toddler by comparison. You say tradition; I say cliché. Forecastle throws something different every year and goes beyond music to include art AND activism. Plus the food, from local vendors, is dope. Pretty sure you can't get Basa Vietnamese at the Downs. Can you bet on the bands at Forecastle? 10515 Meeting St. // 244-2955 handmadeforu.com Pillows, quilts, window treatments, blankets, etc. Happy Hounds 6331 Upper River Road // 292-DOGS (3647) louisvillehappyhounds.com Happy Hounds bills itself as an "unkennel" — an indoor/outdoor daycare and boarding house with room to roam. Something Blue Bridal Accessories & Gifts (2009) 9448 Norton Commons Blvd. // 749-6441 somethingbluelouisville.com Not just for brides — although this is wedding central — Something Blue carries gifts too. The Summit (2001) You can bet on Brittany Howard, Grace Potter and, dare I say, Robert Plant. They're sure to deliver. Well, at least Robert Plant sounds familiar. The Derby is both an accomplishment in itself (We won the Kentucky Derby!) and the start of something bigger: (The Triple Crown chase is on!) Accomplishment is one thing, but dancing and singing are the highest forms of human expression. And it may be the Kentucky Derby, but with the downtown waterfront location and local shops, Forecastle displays what Louisville is. 96 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 6.13 4300 Summit Drive // 425-3441 A highly successful shopping complex just west of the Gene Snyder with more than four dozen stores and restaurants, including the city's only J.
