Cafe Lou Lou (2004) HISTORY 5·FACTS By the mid-1800s, what we now call St. Matthews was known as Gilman's Point, named after tavern owner Daniel Gilman. But in 1851, the neighborhood's frst post offce needed a name. Several residents didn't like the idea of naming it after a bar (sorry, Gilman), so they went with St. Matthews, which at that time was an Episcopal church off Westport Road. Church instead of booze. Weird, because now the fraternity and sorority crowd is at home on Shelbyville Road at Molly Malone's, Drake's, the Tin Roof, martini bar 60 West Bistro — and the list goes on. St. Matthews was known for cockfghting in the early 1900s. In the early 20th century, St. Matthews claimed to be the world's potato capital. R.W. Hite's St. Matthews Potato Exchange, which closed in 1946, once stood near the railroad tracks at what is now Clover Lane. The Encyclopedia of Louisville even includes a 1948 photograph of the St. Matthews Potato Festival parade. A Col. GREATEST HIT 78 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE Equus/Jack's Lounge (1985) NamNam Cafe (318 Wallace Ave.), a hard-to-fnd cinderblock box of a restaurant, makes vermicelli noodles — we get the beef with crunchy bean sprouts, cucumbers, pickled carrots, fried shallots and too much else to list — that we could eat every night for a week.
