Ghyslain (2011) HISTORY In the 1840s, Phoenix Hill and Irish Hill were just that — nobs of high ground above the Middle and South forks of Beargrass Creek, one east and the other west of Baxter Avenue. On the north side of Beargrass, for the most part, was Butchertown, with its stockyards, tanneries, blacksmiths, cooperages and soapmakers. All three were annexed by Louisville before the great wave of German and Irish Catholic immigrants began. Butchertown was frst with a residential grid in 1841; the two hills followed during the next 50 years, their commerce especially favoring breweries and distilleries. 721 E.
