22 Babe Ruth's Louisville Slugger baseball bat Note the notches around the Hillerich and Bradsby label. The Babe carved each of those 20 notches to record homers he hit with this bat in 1927 — the year he clouted 60 home runs. 23 ABA basketball A colorful offcial basketball for a colorful league, which lasted from 1967-'76. Most seasons, the Kentucky Colonels — featuring such stars as Louie Dampier, Dan Issel and Artis Gilmore — played at or near the top of the old American Basketball Association. 24 1980 NCAA Basketball Championship ring University of Louisville basketball players and coaches received championship rings when the Cardinals, led by Darrell Griffth, captured the 1980 NCAA title. When coach Denny Crum and U of L won it again in 1986, the NCAA reset Crum's ring to include signets for '80 and '86. 25 2013 Sugar Bowl trophy The University of Louisville football Cardinals whipped heavily favored Florida 33-23 in the 2013 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans — and brought home the hardware to prove it. 26 Aristides' tendon boots The only known existing object-artifact from the frst Kentucky Derby is a set of tendon boots Aristides wore while winning the inaugural running in 1875. The boots, strapped onto the horse's hind legs by owner-breeder Hal Price McGrath, protected Aristides' back legs from being nicked by his front hooves while running. Today, elastic "run-down" bandages accomplish the same thing and are worn by almost every racehorse. This football was used in the schools' 100th match-up in 1984. Male holds an 80-44 lead in victories, with six ties. 28 Presentation Academy beanie Louisville's oldest continuously run school — originally both an elementary and high school — was founded by Mother Catherine Spalding and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in 1831. The beanie is circa 1955, when an initiation rite had incoming freshmen wear the caps for the frst week or so of classes. (Bet that wouldn't go over so well today.) 29 Muhammad Ali boxing gloves "The Greatest" fought 61 bouts between 1960 and 1981, winning the heavyweight title three times before retiring as the most recognized sports fgure in the world and, through his philanthropy and social activism, a true cultural icon. He wore these sparring gloves in the '60s. 40 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 6.13
